Greece records sixth hottest summer on record
Greece experienced its sixth-warmest summer since records began in 1960, with temperatures averaging 1 degree Celsius above the 1991-2020 seasonal average, according to scientists at the National Observatory of Athens.
Data from meteo.gr showed that 68 of the 92 days of summer were warmer than the seasonal average nationwide.
August was particularly hot, ranking joint third-warmest and averaging 1.6C above normal. June ranked 10th and July 12th among the warmest months recorded.
The summer was 0.56C cooler than 2025, while 2024 remains the hottest summer on record. Western parts of Greece experienced their second- or third-warmest summer, while eastern areas recorded smaller temperature deviations. No region recorded below-average temperatures.
Heat continues
Warm conditions are expected to persist Tuesday, with temperatures reaching up to 35C in parts of the country.
Athens is forecast to reach 33C, while temperatures in Thessaloniki are expected to peak at 31C. Slightly cooler conditions are forecast in western Greece.
Scattered rainfall is possible mainly in mountainous areas of Epirus and the Peloponnese.
Fire risk remains high
The continuing heat and dry conditions have prompted authorities to issue a category 4, or very high, wildfire risk warning for several parts of Greece.
The warning covers Boeotia and Evia, including Skyros, as well as Attica and Kythira, Laconia, the North Aegean islands of Lesvos, Chios, Samos and Ikaria, the Cyclades and Crete.
Civil protection authorities have placed state agencies, regional authorities and municipalities on heightened readiness to respond rapidly to potential fires.
Officials are urging residents and visitors in affected areas to exercise particular caution and follow wildfire prevention and self-protection instructions.
The combination of persistently above-average temperatures and elevated fire danger underscores the continuing heat and wildfire threat even as Greece moves beyond the peak of the summer season.
