The Turkish language has been officially added to the national education curriculum in Montenegro as a foreign elective language, thanks to the efforts of the Yunus Emre Institute (YEE) and its ongoing “My Choice is Turkish” Project.

In a written statement, YEE announced that Türkiye’s official language will now be taught in state schools across Montenegro, providing access to Turkish language education for approximately 40,000 primary school students and 20,000 vocational high school students.

Until now, languages such as Italian, German, Russian, French, and Spanish have been offered as elective foreign languages in Montenegrin schools. With this new decision, Turkish joins the list, marking a significant development in cultural and educational ties between Türkiye and Montenegro.

YEE emphasized that students who choose to learn Turkish may also benefit from educational opportunities in Türkiye, including scholarships and exchange programs.

Although Turkish had already been offered in some schools as an elective, this marks the first time it has been officially incorporated into Montenegro’s Ministry of Education curriculum.

The initiative is expected to strengthen cultural relations, promote multilingualism, and contribute to Türkiye’s soft power in the Balkans.
