Zeybek raises concern in Parliament over possible closure of Xanthi Tax Office

Hüseyin Zeybek, Member of Parliament for Xanthi with the New Left party, submitted a formal statement to the Hellenic Parliament on Tuesday, highlighting growing concerns regarding the potential closure or merger of the Xanthi Tax Office (Δ.Ο.Υ. Ξάνθης), as has been rumored in recent weeks.
The statement includes a letter from the Association of Freelance Tax Professionals of Xanthi (EFEEX), expressing strong opposition and deep concern over the reported plans. The letter emphasizes that such a move would significantly damage local society, business operations, and the administrative integrity of the Xanthi region.
According to the Association, the Xanthi Tax Office plays a crucial role in serving both citizens and businesses and is deemed essential for the smooth functioning of public administration across the Eastern Macedonia and Thrace region.
The letter outlines several potential consequences should the closure proceed:
- Administrative downgrading of the Xanthi regional unit through the loss of a key state institution
- Increased hardship and cost for citizens and professionals, who would be forced to travel to neighboring cities for routine tax matters
- Limited accessibility for vulnerable social groups in this border and multicultural area
- Weakening of the local economy and undermining of the daily work of accountants and tax professionals serving thousands of taxpayers
- Mandatory relocation of employees from the Xanthi Tax Office to other offices in cities like Komotini or Kavala, potentially causing severe social and family disruption for dozens of workers and their families
Concluding his statement, MP Zeybek called on the Ministry to promptly examine the concerns raised in the letter and to provide clear information regarding any immediate plans or actions concerning the future of the Xanthi Tax Office.
