Xanthi Road Project on hold: MP Zeybek demands answers

MP for Xanthi with the New Left party, Mr. Hüseyin Zeybek, has submitted a parliamentary question to the competent ministers regarding the halt of the Xanthi – Echinos – Greek-Bulgarian Border Vertical Road Axis project

The question is co-signed by Ms. Peti Perka, Secretary of the Parliamentary Group of the New Left.

According to the parliamentary question, the tender for the construction of the crucial section “Melivia Bypass – Dimario” has effectively been frozen, raising serious concerns about the future of the project.

This suspension comes just days after a government delegation visited the Prefecture of Xanthi, making the development even more troubling.

Mr. Zeybek reminds that funding for the project, amounting to €40 million, had already been secured back in 2019. However, no significant progress has been made since.

He emphasizes that this delay not only risks losing available resources but also deprives the wider region of Xanthi of a major development opportunity—economically, logistically, and geopolitically.

The question concludes with a call for clear and immediate answers regarding:

The reasons behind the freezing of the tender,

The actions the government intends to take to ensure the project’s continuation,

And the specific timelines for restarting the implementation process.

The Xanthi – Echinos Vertical Axis has long been a demand of the local community and is considered critical infrastructure for connecting Thrace to the Balkans. Any delay or cancellation may undermine efforts for balanced development and regional cohesion.

The responses from the relevant ministries, as well as the next political and technical steps, are now eagerly awaited.
