Christodoulos Topsidis: “The Region will continue to implement projects that strengthen safety, access, and development in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace.”

The administration of the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace (EMT), in line with its commitment to modernize the road network under its jurisdiction, improve road safety, enhance intra-regional transport, and promote cross-border mobility, has approved the integration of a significant new project.

By decision of Regional Governor Christodoulos Topsidis, the project titled “Upgrading Road Safety Standards in the Network under the Jurisdiction of the Regional Unit of Xanthi in its Mountainous Area” has been included in the “Eastern Macedonia and Thrace 2021–2027” Program, with a budget of €6.1 million.

In his statement, Governor Topsidis emphasized the dual importance of the project:

“This project is of dual significance. On one hand, it serves the transportation needs of residents in the mountainous areas of Xanthi with modern and upgraded infrastructure; on the other hand, it ensures the safe operation of the section of the road network connecting Xanthi to the vertical DimarioRudozem axis. This is a vital cross-border route expected to significantly boost the economy, trade, and tourism on both sides of the border.
The Region will continue working toward the implementation of projects that strengthen safety, accessibility, and development in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace.”

Project Details

The project involves road safety upgrades across five sections of National Road 55 and one section of Provincial Road 10, totaling 17.3 kilometers in length.

The planned interventions include:

  • Reconstruction of the asphalt surface
  • Replacement of safety barriers
  • Upgrading horizontal and vertical road signage
  • Management of roadside vegetation

The aim is to improve the safety conditions for road users, particularly in segments that have deteriorated due to wear, heavy traffic loads, and adverse local weather conditions (such as snow and ice).

The project is co-financed by the European Union.
