Western Thrace Turkish Teachers’ Union President Aydın Ahmet issues end-of-year message to students, teachers and parents
Aydın Ahmet, President of the Western Thrace Turkish Teachers’ Union (BTTÖB), has extended his wishes for a pleasant summer break to students, teachers and parents following the conclusion of the 2025-2026 academic year, emphasizing the importance of preserving the mother tongue, fostering reading habits and supporting minority education.
In his message, Ahmet described report cards as a tool for assessment and future planning rather than a definitive measure of success.
“Report cards received at the end of the academic year are simply an evaluation of the current situation. They help students assess their progress and make plans for the future,” he said.
Addressing students, Ahmet highlighted the importance of using the summer holiday not only for rest but also for personal development. He encouraged young members of the Turkish minority in Western Thrace to recognize their role in preserving their community’s future.
“You are the future of our minority. The continuation of our culture and the ability of our community to look to the future with hope depend on your efforts to improve yourselves,” he stated.
Ahmet also encouraged students to develop a habit of reading, describing books as one of the most effective ways to improve Turkish language skills and expand knowledge.
He stressed the significance of the mother tongue, calling it “a precious treasure” that shapes personal identity and self-confidence while also serving as a gateway to learning additional languages.
The BTTÖB president urged students to make greater use of libraries and to develop responsibility in borrowing and returning books. He also warned against excessive engagement with digital games, arguing that they can hinder social interaction and waste valuable time.
In a section dedicated to educators, Ahmet praised teachers for their dedication throughout the academic year.
“We appreciate and thank you for your patience, perseverance, love and compassion in educating our children,” he said.
He added that the modernization of minority education, the enrichment of cultural life, the development of the Turkish language and the strengthening of students’ ability to express themselves largely depend on teachers’ continued professional commitment.
Addressing parents, Ahmet underlined the crucial role of family support in children’s educational success and encouraged families to maintain strong cooperation with schools and teachers.
He devoted particular attention to the future of minority schools, calling on parents to enroll their children in minority educational institutions.
“Our greatest request is that you send your children to minority schools for the sustainability of minority education and the future of our community,” Ahmet said.
He noted that several minority schools have been closed in recent years due to declining student numbers and argued that decisions affecting minority education should not be made without consulting the minority community.
Ahmet also addressed parents who choose not to send their children to minority schools, reminding them that many successful and educated members of the community are graduates of those institutions.
Concluding his message, the BTTÖB president wished students, teachers and parents a healthy, peaceful and productive summer holiday.
