Water tariff meeting postponed in Komotini

The proposed new water tariff policy by the Municipal Water and Sewerage Company of Komotini (DEYAK) has been postponed after being placed on the agenda of the Municipal Council due to insufficient review time.
The proposal, originally decided by DEYAK in October 2024, includes a 10% increase to reflect inflation since 2017 and an additional 6% to fund future infrastructure projects. In total, water bills would see a 16% rise, affecting both fixed charges and consumption rates.
During the Municipal Council session held on Monday, May 26, opposition leaders Antonis Gravanis and Yannis Levendis requested more time to examine the details. They criticized the timing, noting that a cost analysis report exceeding 100 pages was delivered only a few hours before the meeting. The opposition also called for a dedicated session to discuss the issue in depth.
In a statement, DEYAK emphasized that the revised tariff plan aims to align with European Union regulations and was developed with environmental, resource, and financial considerations in mind. The plan also introduces a bi-monthly billing system across Komotini.
The new tariff policy will be brought back to the Council for further discussion in the coming weeks.
