Komotini launches new social support program for the homeless

The Municipality of Komotini has announced the implementation of a new social support initiative titled "Housing and Employment for the Homeless III", in cooperation with its Development Agency "K. Karatheodori S.A.".
Funded by the Ministry of Social Cohesion and Family of Greece, the program has a total budget of €400,000. The Municipality of Komotini serves as the implementing body, while K. Karatheodori S.A. acts as the managing authority.
This initiative is part of a nationwide plan aiming to combat social exclusion and improve living conditions for vulnerable groups.
Core Goal: Social and Professional Reintegration
Athanasios Lapatas, President of the Development Agency, emphasized that the program’s primary objective is to eliminate homelessness and facilitate the reintegration of disadvantaged individuals into society and the workforce.
Key components of the program include:
Rental assistance for 24 months, secured by the managing authority,
Financial support for basic needs such as home furnishings, utility bills (electricity, water, natural gas), maintenance, and energy certification,
Employment subsidies and vocational training for up to 12 months,
Psychosocial support and individual counseling services.
15 Households and 40 Beneficiaries
Olga Katsiani, Social Services Expert for the Municipality of Komotini and the program’s Scientific Coordinator, stated that 15 households currently without secure housing or at risk of eviction have been selected for participation.
The 40 beneficiaries include 18 adults and 22 children, encompassing individuals from women’s shelters, those facing eviction, and those living in unsuitable housing conditions.
Katsiani stressed that the project is more than just a support initiative—it is a strategic step toward social reintegration:
“Our goal is to ensure the minimum living standards for vulnerable individuals, enabling them to reclaim their right to social participation and strengthen social cohesion.”
A Holistic, Human-Centered Approach
Elena Kalaitzidou, a social services expert with the agency, added that the program follows a comprehensive model, combining material support with psychosocial services:
“The program offers more than just housing and job placement. It presents a life model that addresses all fundamental human needs.”
Property Owners and Employers Invited to Participate
The Municipality and K. Karatheodori S.A. have invited local landlords and employers to join the solidarity network. Their collaboration in providing housing or job opportunities to beneficiaries is considered crucial to the success of the intervention.
In closing, Agency President Lapatas reaffirmed Komotini’s inclusive character:
“Differences are not obstacles in our city—they are the foundation of our unity and solidarity. Komotini is a model for social cohesion.”
