Growers in the Rhodope region are showing significant interest in cultivating quinoa, a pseudo-grain increasingly appreciated for its nutritional qualities and growing market demand. This was evident at an information session organized on Friday, September 12, by the Gümülcine Agricultural Association “Spartakos,” aimed at briefing local farmers on quinoa cultivation.

Key Details from the Information Session

The event featured presentations on best cultivation practices, including preparing the soil, tending the plants, and managing yields.

Attendees learned about quinoa’s nutritional profile (high protein, essential amino acids), its adaptability (tolerance of low water, varied soils including higher pH and semi-arid conditions), and its potential as a “superfood.”

Discussion covered technical cultivation issues: when to plant, how much irrigation is needed, soil requirements, and harvesting methods.

Broader Trends & Context

Similar developments are occurring elsewhere in northeastern Greece: in Rhodope, about 20 farmers are cultivating quinoa over some 400 hectares, supported by a European subsidy (~€62/ha). Quinoa is being viewed as a more resilient alternative to traditional crops like cotton and grains, particularly under shifting climate conditions.

Quinoa cultivation in Greece has also been researched in regions like Thessaly, where trials have shown promising yields and adaptability under Mediterranean climate conditions.

Studies show that quinoa tolerates a wide range of environmental stresses: drought, varied soil pH, temperature fluctuations, making it suitable for marginal lands in the Mediterranean.
