Over 400 fires recorded in İskeçe Regional Unit during fire season
More than 400 fire incidents were recorded in the Regional Unit of İskeçe during the 2025 wildfire prevention season, according to official data from Greece’s Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection.
While the municipalities of Avdira and Topeiros topped the list of fire-prone areas, the figures show that the entire Xanthi region faced an unprecedented number of agricultural and forest fires over just a few months.
Eastern Macedonia and Thrace Tops National Fire List
In a public statement, Deputy Mayor for Civil Protection of İskeçe, Mr. Tsapalis, noted that the Eastern Macedonia and Thrace Region ranked first nationwide, with a total of 907 wildfires during the fire season.
“In the Municipality of İskeçe alone, more than 220 incidents were recorded,” he said. “Across the entire Regional Unit, the Fire Service responded to over 400 emergencies, illustrating the scale of the threat we faced this year.”
Coordinated Response Praised
Tsapalis emphasized that the Municipal Civil Protection Service, under the coordination of Mayor Stratos Kontos and in close cooperation with local authorities, played a crucial role in managing the crisis effectively.
“Thanks to teamwork and continuous collaboration between all agencies, we successfully concluded a highly demanding season, protecting both our citizens and the natural wealth of our area,” he stated.
The Deputy Mayor also extended warm congratulations to the İskeçe Fire Service, municipal employees, the 4th Army Corps, the Regional Authority, the Police, local volunteers, and fire-prevention drone operators for their contribution to this collective effort.
