Greece has always taken the recommendations of the EU Commission's annual report on the rule of law very seriously and has always tried to comply with them as best as possible, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis asserted during a meeting with European Commission Vice-President for Values and Transparency Věra Jourová in Athens on Monday 15 April.
'Our country should immediately implement the ECtHR judgements'

Stating that they are in excellent co-operation with the European authorities, Mr Mitsotakis claimed that significant progress has been made in Greece, which is also recognised by the EU Commission.

Regarding the issue, Federation of Western Thrace Turks in Europe (ABTTF) President Halit Habipoğlu said: "Prime Minister Mitsotakis, like his ministers in the government of our country, has ignored the sincere and constructive warnings and criticisms coming from Europe in the recent period regarding the deterioration of the rule of law in our country Greece and has chosen to deny the facts. In fact, the European Parliament, in its resolution adopted on 7 February 2024, stated that it has serious concerns that the rule of law is under threat in our country and called on the EU Commission to take action. Similarly, independent non-governmental organisations operating in our country have also reported to the EU Commission the continuous violation of the rule of law and institutional regression in our country. The Turkish community in Western Thrace is also experiencing the negative effects of the systematic violation of the rule of law in our country. Our country continues to violate the freedom of association of our community by persistently not implementing the judgements of the European Court of Human Rights against our three associations in the Bekir Usta and Others Case Group for 16 years. Our country must prove that it fully respects the principle of the rule of law in substance, not in word, by implementing the judgements of the European Court of Human Rights as a matter of urgency."
