Beloved confectioner Mehmet Hüseyin dies in Gümülcine

Hacı Mehmet Hüseyin, affectionately known as "Uncle Mehmet the Tulumba Maker," a well-known confectioner from the Yenimahalle neighborhood of Gümülcine, passed away on Monday, Aug. 3, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of traditional craftsmanship and community service.

For decades, Mehmet Hüseyin was widely recognized for his handmade tulumba desserts, ice cream and yogurt, earning admiration not only across Gümülcine and the Rodopi regional unit but throughout Western Thrace, other parts of Greece and among Western Thracians living abroad.

Respected for his honesty, generosity and close ties with local residents, Mehmet Hüseyin became one of Yenimahalle's most beloved figures. Beyond his business, he was known for actively supporting neighborhood initiatives and contributing to community projects whenever needed.

His tulumba dessert, especially prepared during the holy month of Ramadan, became one of his signature specialties and helped establish his reputation as a master of traditional sweets.

Mehmet Hüseyin had recently undergone surgery following a health issue. On Monday, he visited the hospital for a follow-up examination and was informed that his recovery was progressing well. After returning home, he suddenly fell ill and passed away.

Born in 1950, Hacı Mehmet Hüseyin will be laid to rest following the afternoon funeral prayer on Tuesday, Aug. 4, at the Yenimahalle Cemetery in Gümülcine.

His passing has been met with deep sorrow across Yenimahalle and the wider Western Thrace community, where he is remembered not only for his traditional delicacies but also for his kindness, humility and lifelong dedication to serving others.
