Opposition slams Demircik–Greek-Bulgarian border road as “failure of planning” days after inauguration
The criticism followed a heated debate at the Regional Council, where officials acknowledged serious safety shortcomings on a road that had recently been promoted as a “European-standard” infrastructure project.
“From Ribbon-Cutting Spectacle to Admission of Failure”
In a strongly worded statement, the Independent United Initiative said that just days after ribbon-cutting ceremonies, publicity events, and photo opportunities, the regional administration itself conceded that the road does not meet basic safety standards.
“A so-called modern transport corridor ends in five-meter-wide roads, passes through residential areas, includes sharp bends, and offers zero visibility,” the opposition said.
Safety Concerns and Recorded Accidents
Rather than completing the project to full specifications, the opposition argues that authorities are now proposing restrictions, bans, and half-measures, despite the fact that traffic accidents have already occurred along the route.
“Human life cannot be treated as collateral damage for communication strategies,” the statement reads, adding that economic benefits do not justify unsafe infrastructure.
Call for Full Closure Until Safety Standards Are Met
Based on these concerns, the Independent United Initiative explained its stance during the council session, stating that the only responsible option is the complete closure of the crossing from Bulgaria into Greece until the project is fully completed under proper safety conditions.
“There is nothing more permanent than the temporary,” the group warned, rejecting what it called a dangerous normalization of substandard infrastructure.
The opposition concluded by confirming it voted against the proposed measures, refusing to “co-sign a road trap in the name of public impressions.”
