Opposition Party criticises the mixing of recyclables with rubbish

Gravanis and his team, leader of the main opposition KOMOTINI DINATA List in the Municipality of Komotini, criticised Mayor Yannis Garanis and his administration for their insensitivity to recycling.

The Municipality of Komotini has both green bins for normal garbage and blue bins for the collection of recyclable products such as glass, plastic, and paper.

Antonis Gravanis, leader of the main opposition KOMOTINI DINATA list, and his team, in a written statement, criticised Mayor Garanis and his administration, claiming that what is collected in these separate bins is dumped in the same vehicle and that what is collected for recycling is mixed with normal garbage.

In a written statement, the KOMOTINI DINATA team said the following about the issue:

"For the Mayor Yannis Garanis, recycling is for garbage. The municipal authority is far from "sensitive" about recycling, as confirmed by the numerous complaints from citizens and the photos of the collection of a garbage truck, a green bin and a blue recycling bin in the city centre. In other words, the Garanis Municipal Authority is throwing away the recycling made by the citizens.

Far from being an isolated incident, on the occasion of this incident, at the municipal council meeting, we asked the mayor if he was aware of these practices of the Deputy Mayor for Sanitation.

However, Mr Garanis once again followed his usual tactics and knew nothing. Not a word about the irresponsibility, inaction and incompetence of the current municipal administration. The municipal authority tells us its eternal argument at every opportunity. The citizen is to blame in this regard.

The citizens of Komotini who are indifferent to recycling, who remain uneducated, who throw their rubbish wherever they can, who fill the blue and green bins with common rubbish.

This is not a situation that can be blamed on individual citizens, Mr Garanis. The majority of residents are environmentally conscious and actively participate in the recycling programme. But you probably don't realise that either.

Just as proper collection is not the responsibility of the labourers who fight every day and only carry out the orders of their political superiors.

The collection and sorting of recyclable materials is an obligation of the municipal authority within the framework of the national and European recycling programme.

The disposal of recyclable materials collected by citizens in landfills under the responsibility of the Garani municipality constitutes a serious moral and legal violation."
