Only two applications approved in Meriç relocation program
Greek Minister for Family and Social Cohesion Domna Michailidou announced that only two of the 700 applications submitted under the Meriç regional relocation program have been approved.
Speaking on ERT television, Michailidou acknowledged significant challenges in implementing the program, which was launched last year to encourage population growth and economic activity in the Evros (Meriç) region of northeastern Greece.
Minister Cites Application Irregularities
“Sometimes we, as the state, make mistakes, but we also see that citizens do not always act responsibly,” the minister said. “In the Meriç settlement program, we encounter this problem quite often, and it is truly disappointing.”
Despite low rental prices, increased private-sector job opportunities, and well-functioning schools and hospitals in the region, Michailidou noted that the majority of applications were invalid.
“At the moment, we have around 700 applications, but only two can be approved,” she said.
Concerns Over Applicants’ Intentions
Michailidou added that most applicants were already living or working in the area, which disqualified them from receiving relocation benefits.
“I’m not sure whether there’s genuinely little interest from people who want to relocate, or whether most applicants simply want to benefit from the available funds,” she remarked.
Background: Incentives for Small Towns
The Meriç Relocation Program, announced a year ago by the Prime Minister, offers financial incentives of up to €10,000 to individuals who move to and work in smaller settlements in Soufli, Didymoteicho, and Orestiada. The initiative aims to revitalize rural communities facing depopulation near Greece’s northeastern border.
