New Left MPs demand immediate compensation and protective measures for local fishermen

Five Members of Parliament from the New Left, led by Xanthi MP Huseyin Zeybek, have submitted a question to the Hellenic Parliament regarding the urgent need to support fishermen in Thrace, who have been severely affected by the reappearance of the destructive “sea snot” phenomenon in the Thracian Sea.

This organic matter has re-emerged since early February, causing extensive damage by clogging nets, destroying fishing equipment, and worsening marine life conditions due to oxygen depletion.

The MPs highlight the significant financial losses suffered by local fishermen and report a widespread withdrawal from fishing activity.

The President of the Alexandroupolis Fishermen’s Association described the situation as “a final blow” to already dwindling incomes.

The MPs also denounce discrimination between fishermen in the Thermaic and Thracian Gulfs, pointing out that while Thessaloniki's fishermen received compensation for similar events, those in Thrace have so far only received promises.

Based on these issues, the MPs submitted the following questions to the relevant minister:

1. Does the Ministry intend to proceed with immediate financial compensation for Thrace's fishermen due to the damages caused by the sea snot phenomenon?

2. Is there a plan to establish a permanent support mechanism for fishermen impacted by proven damage from natural phenomena?

3. What scientific tools and in cooperation with which organizations does the Ministry intend to use for monitoring and managing the sea snot phenomenon in the Northern Aegean?
