MP Zeybek submits parliamentary question on the preservation of historical buildings in Xanthi

The question, submitted by New Left Party MP Hüseyin Zeybek along with the Party's Head of Cultural Policies, MP Sia Anagnostopoulou, addresses the insufficient budget and delayed implementation of the “DIATIRO” program, which aims to restore historical structures in areas rich with social, economic, and cultural heritage, such as Xanthi's old town.

The proposal emphasizes that Xanthi's old city is one of Greece's most important traditional settlements, featuring unique architectural and cultural heritage. However, many buildings in the area are currently abandoned and in urgent need of restoration.

Despite being announced by the Ministry of Environment and Energy in 2020, the "DIATIRO" program for the restoration of protected historical buildings has not yet been implemented. Zeybek pointed out the following issues in the question:

The program was initially divided into two phases, with an initial budget of 450 million euros. However, the budget for the first phase was reduced to 70 million euros, which is insufficient to meet the financial needs.
The Ministry of Education and Culture had pledged to allocate 250 million euros for this program under the ESPA funding scheme, but this promise was not fulfilled, and the program received only a meager 7 million euros.
Zeybek directed the following questions to the relevant ministers:

Why is the inclusion of privately-owned historical buildings in the program delayed, and what is the timeline for its implementation?
Will the program's budget be reviewed to reflect the real needs of property owners, as initially announced?
What other measures do you plan to take to support citizens who own protected historical properties, especially in Xanthi's old town (Palia Poli), in order to prevent the loss of cultural and architectural heritage?
