Sofulu councillor calls for publication of drinking water test results

Mehmet Çilingir, a municipal councillor in Sofulu (Soufli), has called on the municipality to publicly disclose drinking water test results following repeated water supply interruptions and concerns over water quality in several local settlements.

In a written application dated October 13, 2026, Çilingir addressed the Mayor’s Office and the Municipal Council Presidency, requesting detailed information about water quality, testing procedures and the authorities responsible for conducting the analyses.

The application specifically highlights concerns in Demirören, Büyük Derbent and Kartunça, settlements administered by Sofulu Municipality in the Meriç (Evros) regional area.

REQUEST FOR CHEMICAL AND MICROBIOLOGICAL TEST RESULTS

Çilingir has requested the publication of all chemical and microbiological drinking water test results obtained in recent months.

He is also seeking clarification on which settlements have been tested, how frequently samples are collected and at what intervals water quality is assessed in each location.

In addition, the councillor has asked the municipality to identify the institutions or authorised bodies responsible for carrying out the analyses.

The requests follow recurring water supply interruptions and reported concerns about drinking water quality in the municipality’s settlements. However, the application itself does not establish that the water is contaminated or unsafe to drink.

CALL FOR TRANSPARENCY AND PUBLIC INFORMATION

Çilingir argues that residents must receive accurate and comprehensive information about the safety of their drinking water.

According to his application, access to safe drinking water falls within the municipality’s responsibilities, while transparent publication of test results is essential to ensuring that residents can assess water quality based on reliable information.

He warned that without access to detailed testing data, residents may lack sufficient information to understand the condition of their local water supply.

The municipality has been asked to disclose the test results, sampling frequency and identities of the competent testing authorities so that the public can be properly informed.

WATER QUALITY IN SOFULU UNDER SCRUTINY

The application brings renewed attention to drinking water monitoring and public accountability in Sofulu Municipality.

Publishing the requested data would allow residents to examine the available test results and better understand how water quality is monitored across the affected settlements.

The source report does not include a response from Sofulu Municipality or the results of any water tests. The safety of the drinking water therefore cannot be determined from the information currently provided.
