Göynüklü maintains traditional mahya gathering in Western Thrace
The traditional mahya gathering in Göynüklü, a village in the plain of İskeçe (Xanthi), was held on Sunday, October 11, bringing residents together to preserve a longstanding tradition of the Turkish minority of Western Thrace.
The annual event was attended by Mustafa Trampa, the mufti of İskeçe, who joined villagers and members of the mahya organising committee for the programme at Göynüklü Mosque.
The gathering featured the recitation of the Mevlid-i Şerif, a devotional text commemorating the birth of the Prophet Muhammad, followed by prayers.
MUFTI TRAMPA THANKS VILLAGERS AND ORGANISERS
Following the event, Trampa thanked the people of Göynüklü and the mahya organising committee in a social media post, expressing his appreciation for their invitation and praying for the continued blessings of the gathering.
PRESERVING CULTURAL AND SPIRITUAL HERITAGE
The mahya gathering has been held for many years in the plain of İskeçe and remains an important occasion for residents to come together around shared religious and cultural traditions.
Organisers and villagers continue to sustain the event, which also provides an opportunity to strengthen community ties and pass the region’s cultural and spiritual heritage on to younger generations.
