Municipality of Gümülcine showcases accessibility initiative “City for All” at ICTR 2025
The Municipality of Komotini participated in the “Urban Mobility Day: Public–Private Dialogue” event on October 16, 2025, held in Selanik as part of the International Conference on Transportation Research 2025 (ICTR 2025). The event was organized in collaboration with the European Institute of Innovation and Technology for Urban Mobility (EIT Urban Mobility) and the Hellenic Institute of Transport and Technology (EKETA/CERTH).
During the presentation titled “Gümülcine – A Sustainable City for All,” Despoina Passou, Director of Technical Services for the municipality, highlighted key projects aimed at improving urban accessibility. These included the renovation of streets and squares in the historic center, creation of accessible beaches for persons with disabilities, accessibility upgrades to schools, public buildings, and open spaces, participatory programs during European Mobility Week, as well as “smart” interventions to facilitate urban mobility and residents’ daily life.
According to the municipality, Gümülcine presented a multi-layered urban model combining technical infrastructure, social innovation, and active citizen participation, aiming for inclusive urban planning and equal opportunities for all.
The event also featured discussions and experience exchanges with representatives from other cities, universities, and innovation institutions, emphasizing collaboration for sustainable mobility solutions. Martí Massot, representing EIT Urban Mobility, highlighted the critical role of public–private cooperation in driving urban innovation.
The participation of the Municipality of Gümülcine at ICTR 2025 underscores its ongoing commitment to developing an accessible, innovative, and inclusive city, serving as a model for both Thrace and Europe.
