MP Burhan Baran raises concerns over youth migration and employment in İskeçe
The written inquiry, submitted on June 8, was addressed to Interior Minister Theodoros Livanios, National Economy and Finance Minister Kyriakos Pierrakakis, Development Minister Takis Theodorikakos, and Labour and Social Security Minister Niki Kerameos.
In his submission, Baran argued that İskeçe has been facing significant demographic, social, and economic challenges in recent years, with increasing numbers of young people leaving the region in search of better employment prospects, career opportunities, and economic stability in larger cities or abroad.
According to the MP, the weakening of the productive sector, limited investment activity, and a shortage of stable employment opportunities have accelerated migration trends among younger generations. He warned that the continued outflow of young residents poses serious risks not only to the region’s demographic profile but also to its long-term economic development, productive capacity, and social cohesion.
Baran emphasized that the issue is particularly significant for Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, a border region whose future development depends heavily on retaining its skilled and active population.
In his parliamentary question, Baran requested official data regarding both domestic and international migration of young people from Xanthi over the past five years. He also asked whether the government plans to introduce employment and vocational placement programs aimed at encouraging young people to remain in the region.
The MP further sought clarification on whether special tax, investment, and social insurance incentives are being considered for businesses that create new job opportunities for people under the age of 35.
Additionally, Baran requested information on existing or planned funding instruments and development programs designed to support youth entrepreneurship, innovation, and the establishment of new businesses in the border regions of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace.
The inquiry also called for details on measures aimed at strengthening cooperation between local industries, educational institutions, universities, and the business sector in order to prevent the departure of young scientists and skilled professionals.
Baran concluded that retaining young people, expanding employment opportunities, and creating meaningful development prospects are essential for the future of Xanthi and the wider region, urging the relevant ministries to take concrete action.
