Missing hiker found unconscious after bear attack in Rodopi mountains

A dramatic rescue unfolded on Mount Frakto in northeastern Greece as emergency teams located a hiker who had fallen 150 meters into a ravine after a bear attack. The man, identified as a member of the Drama Runners Club, was found unconscious and is expected to be airlifted by helicopter.
The incident occurred as the two hikers were returning from a trek to a World War II plane wreck in the dense Frakto Virgin Forest. According to his companion Dimitris Kioroglu, the bear charged at them, pushing the victim—Christos—off a cliff during the confrontation.
Kioroglu, who was saved by his trained dog and pepper spray, immediately called emergency services and coordinated the response with locals. The rugged terrain made access difficult, with the nearest road over two hours away on foot.
Authorities believe the bear was a mother protecting her cubs. Mount Frakto, a highly protected area known for its untouched wilderness and diverse wildlife, has strict access regulations, particularly during breeding season.
