Minority protests the shift education system
Due to the shift system brought because of the lack of space and building in Muzaffer Salihoğlu Minority High School of Xanthi, it was held a march by the parents today (on September 23) in Xanthi. During the protest in which approximately 3 thousand people attended, a solution was demanded from the government.
Western Thrace Turks continue to grapple with problems in education for years. This year a new problem has been added to the problems experienced at the beginning of each academic year in recent year. When 161 students enrolled in the school, which had 77 graduates last year, the school administration wanted to set a shift system by moving 3 classes to the afternoon program. Temporary solutions which do not bring any outcome caused the reaction of parents and the whole minority.
The parents have been boycotting the school since the first day of school opening by keeping it closed. About 10 days since the local authorities could not find a solution to the problem, the parents decided to march as a result of their meeting.
In accordance with the decision taken today (Monday, 23 September) at 11:30, the march that started in front of the school continued in Xanthi city square and from there to the governorship building. The march in which parents and students led, was attended by about 3 thousand people. Xanthi MPs Hüseyin Zeybek and Burhan Baran, Elected Mufti of Xanthi Ahmet Mete, Mustafçova Mayor Rıdvan Deli Hüseyin, Regional Parliament Member Rıdvan Kurak, Xanthi and Myki Municipality Deputy Mayors, President of Western Thrace Turkish Teachers Association Aydın Ahmet, President of Western Thrace Higher Educateds' Association Baltacı, President of Xanthi Turkish Union Ozan Ahmetoğlu, President of Çınar Association Cengiz Ömer, school principal, teachers and a large community of people joined the march.
At the end of the march that ended in front of the governor's office, a delegation of elected officials met with the Vice President and conveyed the problem and demands once more. After the meeting, the Board of Directors and the Parent-Teacher Union said that the Regional Governor Metios will meet with the Deputy Minister of Education tomorrow (Tuesday) and the necessary solution to the problem will be reported. The action will continue on Tuesday and the next route will be determined by parents at the school on Tuesday.
