Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni visits Çelebi Sultan Mehmet Mosque in Dimetoka
Accompanied by directors from the Ministry of Culture and Eastern Macedonia and Thrace Regional Governor Christodoulos Topsidis, Mendoni reviewed the progress of the restoration project, emphasizing the necessity of completing the work by December 31, 2025.
During her visit, Mendoni highlighted the significance and complexity of the project, particularly focusing on the reconstruction of the mosque's wooden roof. She stated, "As I have mentioned before, this is a complex project that requires close monitoring of its strict schedule. It is one of the largest wooden structures in Europe, thus necessitating restoration in accordance with scientific and technical methods."
Mendoni also pointed out that necessary arrangements have already been made with a foreign company responsible for cutting and assembling the components, in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture and the National Technical University of Athens, following a stringent specification.
The Çelebi Sultan Mehmet (Beyazit) Mosque, severely damaged by a fire in 2017 and considered one of the most important Turkish-Islamic monuments in the Balkans, is being restored with funding from the Rescue Fund.
