The Ministry of Agriculture and Food, led by Secretary General Yorgos Stratakos, organized meetings in Komotini and Alexandroupolis to address the recent outbreak of pox among sheep and goats. The discussions focused on the measures being taken to control the disease.
On Wednesday, October 23, 2024, extensive discussions were held at the Eastern Macedonia and Thrace Region Headquarters in Komotini and Alexandroupolis. The meetings reviewed precautionary measures implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture.
The meeting in Alexandroupolis was attended by Eastern Macedonia and Thrace Regional Governor Christodoulos Topsidis and Deputy Governor of the Evros region Evangelos Poulilios.
In Komotini, participants included Eastern Macedonia and Thrace Office Director Vasilis Mavridis, Veterinary Services Head Nikolaos Foteinias, as well as officials from veterinary services, agricultural development, and Greece’s Food Safety Authority (EFET).
Key decisions included a 10-day nationwide ban on the movement of sheep and goats, as well as a halt on livestock slaughter. Veterinary teams continue to conduct clinical examinations of animals within designated protection and surveillance zones.
Secretary General Stratakos emphasized that once the inspections are completed, there will be a clearer understanding of the disease’s progression. Authorities assured that these measures are crucial for preventing the spread of the virus, which poses no risk to human health.
