Major cigarette smuggling operation foiled at Kipoi border crossing

Customs officials at the Kipoi border crossing between Greece and Turkiye have intercepted a truck carrying nearly 2.5 million smuggled cigarettes destined for Germany, marking the largest such seizure in Greece this year.
The operation was conducted on Thursday by Greece’s Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE), following targeted intelligence regarding the shipment.
The truck, which began its journey from Turkiye, was declared to be transporting clothing and metal components. However, an inspection revealed 12,496 cartons – containing 2,499,200 contraband cigarettes – hidden in boxes.
Authorities estimate the retail value of the seized cigarettes at approximately €577,000, with potential losses to state revenue from duties and taxes exceeding €508,000.
An expert evaluation by trademark holders and the General Chemical State Laboratory is underway to finalize the assessment.
In addition to the cigarettes, officials also uncovered a significant quantity of counterfeit clothing, which is currently being counted.
The truck and all seized items have been confiscated, and legal proceedings – both criminal and administrative – have been initiated.
