Journalist Mustafa Şargo laid to rest in İskeçe after three-month medical struggle
Journalist Mustafa Şargo was laid to rest on Tuesday, April 21, following a funeral ceremony held in the northeastern Greek city of İskeçe, marking the end of a three-month battle for life after a severe brain hemorrhage.
Şargo, who worked for the Turkish-language Gündem newspaper in Western Thrace, passed away on Monday evening despite prolonged medical treatment. His death has prompted an outpouring of grief among colleagues, community leaders, and members of the Turkish minority in the region.
The funeral prayer took place at Çınar Mosque following the afternoon (Asr) prayer, drawing a large crowd of mourners. Among those in attendance were Türkiye’s Consul General in Gümülcine, Aykut Ünal, accompanied by his wife İlayda Ünal.
Prominent figures from the Western Thrace Turkish minority community also attended, including Mustafa Trampa, who serves as Chairman of the Advisory Board of the Turkish Minority of Western Thrace. Members of the Hellenic Parliament, Hüseyin Zeybek and Burhan Baran, as well as Friendship, Equality and Peace Party (FEP) leader Çiğdem Asafoğlu, were also present alongside numerous representatives of minority institutions and local residents.
Speaking after the funeral prayer, Mufti Trampa expressed deep sorrow over Şargo’s passing, noting his dedication to journalism and public service. “We are deeply saddened by the loss of our young brother Mustafa Şargo. He was committed to serving the public, always striving for good, and closely engaged with the issues of the minority community,” he said, extending condolences to the Gündem newspaper and the broader media community.
Following the ceremony, Şargo was laid to rest at the Lower Neighborhood Cemetery in İskeçe.
His passing marks a significant loss for local journalism and the Turkish minority community in Western Thrace, where he was known for his commitment, integrity, and advocacy.
