İskeçe Mufti Mustafa Trampa issues Miraj Night message, criticizes unilateral Mufti appointment
The Elected Mufti of İskeçe, Mustafa Trampa, has issued a message on the occasion of Miraj Night (Laylat al-Mi‘raj), emphasizing its spiritual significance for Muslims while also addressing recent developments affecting the Western Thrace Turkish Muslim Minority.
In his message, Mufti Trampa noted that Miraj Night will be observed on the evening of Thursday, January 15, 2026, describing it as one of the most meaningful nights of the holy three months. He recalled the Isra and Mi‘raj miracles, underlining that prayer (salat) is the greatest gift of Miraj and “the spiritual ascension of the believer.”
“Just as the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) ascended to the presence of Almighty Allah during the Miraj, believers also stand directly before their Lord through prayer, without any intermediary,” he said, calling on Muslims to revive the night with prayer, repentance, charity and supplication.
Call for Peace and Justice
Mufti Trampa also urged prayers for an end to oppression, particularly in Palestine, and appealed for a world based on justice, law and moral values, where children and innocent civilians can live in peace.
“These blessed nights are opportunities for self-reflection, strengthening our bond with prayer and renewing our faith,” he stated.
Strong Reaction to Unilateral Mufti Appointment
In the latter part of his message, Mufti Trampa addressed the unilateral appointment of a mufti in Dimetoka on 9 January 2026, describing it as a profound disappointment for the Western Thrace Turkish Muslim Minority.
“Our will has once again been ignored,” he said, stressing that such appointments, made without consulting the minority and in disregard of international treaties, are unacceptable and illegitimate.
Mufti Trampa underlined that the mufti institution is not an administrative tool of the state, but a reflection of the religious conscience, freedom of belief and free will of the minority community.
“This practice contradicts the rule of law, democratic values and social harmony,” he stated, recalling that similar anti-democratic practices date back to 1991, when a mufti was appointed in İskeçe despite receiving the lowest number of votes.
Despite his criticism, Mufti Trampa expressed hope that Greek authorities would abandon unilateral approaches and resolve the mufti issue and other minority problems through dialogue, in line with international treaties and the will of the minority community.
Message of Unity
Concluding his statement, Mufti Trampa called on the community to strengthen unity, solidarity and mutual trust, emphasizing that faith and togetherness are the keys to overcoming hardship.
“I congratulate all believers on Miraj Night and pray that Almighty Allah grants us health, peace and the blessing of reaching many more holy nights,” he said.
