Informative event on child abuse organized by the Municipality of Komotini
An informative event on child abuse was co-organized yesterday by the Municipality of Komotini and the Department of Social Policies, hosted at the packed Municipal Library of Komotini.
The event featured a speech by Olga Themeli, Professor at the Department of Psychology at the University of Crete, titled “The Role of Every Citizen in Uncovering Cases of Abuse.” Prof. Themeli highlighted the issues of silence and cover-ups regarding abuse, stating, “Unfortunately, both silence and concealment exist, and we all bear some responsibility for this.” She also stressed, “We are heading in the wrong direction, as the state focuses solely on harsher penalties, while what is truly needed is prevention and education starting from preschool age.”
The event was moderated by Cleopatra Stogiannidou, Deputy Mayor of Social Solidarity, Equality Policies, and Gender-Based Violence Prevention.
