Human rights advocate dimitras criticizes Kathimerini: “The ‘Dimetoka Mufti’ article conceals key facts”

Panayotis Dimitras, spokesperson for the Greek Helsinki Monitor (GHM), has strongly criticized an article published by Kathimerini, arguing that it omits critical facts regarding the Turkish minority of Western Thrace and presents a narrative aimed at absolving the government of responsibility.

Dimitras targeted an opinion piece by Kathimerini columnist Stavros Tzimas titled “The Dimetoka Mufti in Kathimerini: Our Door Will Be Open to Everyone,” claiming that the article selectively frames the issue of the Didymoteicho (Dimetoka) Mufti while marginalizing minority perspectives.

“A Narrative That Whitewashes the Government”

According to Dimitras, the article adopts a government-friendly framework when addressing the mufti issue, while largely excluding the views of the Turkish minority and its elected representatives in Western Thrace.

He specifically criticized the absence of references to:

The FEP Party (Friendship, Equality and Peace Party)

Relevant rulings of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR)

The positions of three MPs elected by the Turkish minority

Dimitras argued that these omissions distort public understanding of a long-standing human rights issue.

Dimitras: “Critical Facts Are Being Deliberately Hidden”

In a statement shared on his personal social media account, Dimitras said:

“In an effort to whitewash the government and the deep state, Kathimerini and Stavros Tzimas conceal the fact that three of the four minority MPs have criticized this appointment. They also fail to mention that, in the European elections, 80% of the minority—dismissively labeled as a ‘misguided hard core’—voted for the minority party DEB.”

He further accused the newspaper and its columnist of ignoring dozens of rulings and recommendations issued by the European Court of Human Rights, the Council of Europe, and the United Nations, particularly the ECHR judgments concerning the closure of four Turkish minority associations, which Greece has failed to implement for years.

Concerns Over Transparency and International Obligations

Dimitras warned that such reporting contributes to the concealment of Greece’s international human rights obligations from the public and undermines informed debate on minority rights.

He stressed that responsible journalism must reflect all relevant legal, political, and social dimensions, especially in cases involving internationally recognized minority rights.
