Greek PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis to attend New Democracy pre-congress meeting in Dedeağaç
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is set to visit Alexandroupoli on Wednesday, February 25, to participate in a pre-congress meeting organized by the ruling New Democracy party ahead of its 16th Ordinary Congress.
The event, themed “Safe Greece,” marks the second in a series of pre-congress gatherings and will take place in Alexandroupoli (Dedeağaç), a strategic city in northeastern Greece. The broader congress is scheduled for May 15–17 in Athens.
Focus on Security and Migration
According to party officials, the program will unfold in two segments.
The first segment will feature a panel discussion with key cabinet members, including Citizen Protection Minister Michalis Chrisochoidis, Migration and Asylum Minister Thanos Plevris, and Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Minister Yannis Kefalogiannis.
The second segment will include an evaluation session on security issues with Prime Minister Mitsotakis addressing party members and regional representatives.
Lawmakers from the Eastern Macedonia and Thrace region, local party officials, central committee members, and youth wing representatives are expected to attend.
Strategic Significance
Dedeağaç has gained increased political and geopolitical attention in recent years due to its location near Greece’s northeastern border and its role in energy and security infrastructure. The choice of venue underscores the government’s emphasis on national security, border management, and regional stability as central themes ahead of the party’s congress.
The pre-congress process is seen as an opportunity for New Democracy to consolidate its policy messaging and mobilize party structures in the lead-up to the May congress in Athens.
