Dedeağaç introduces red heart pedestrian traffic lights

A pedestrian traffic light in Dedeağaç has replaced the traditional red “stop” symbol with a red heart in a new initiative designed to make waiting at traffic lights a more positive experience.

The new symbol has been installed on Demokrasi Boulevard, in front of the Officers’ Club, and currently applies only to pedestrian traffic lights.

The initiative was launched by Dedeağaç Mayor Yannis Zampoukis, who said he first saw the idea in Iceland several years ago and was impressed by its visual message. Increased pedestrian and vehicle traffic in the city, particularly during the tourism season, prompted him to revisit the concept.

According to Zampoukis, the red heart is intended to encourage pedestrians to use the few seconds of waiting at the traffic light to “think of their loved ones.” The idea is that a more positive and emotionally engaging symbol could make the waiting period feel less frustrating while also discouraging pedestrians from attempting to cross the road before the light turns green.

The municipality is planning to extend the initiative to other pedestrian traffic lights along Demokrasi Boulevard and to areas around schools in the coming period.

Zampoukis acknowledged that a red heart alone cannot solve the city’s traffic problems, but said the initiative could make a small positive contribution to people’s mood amid the pressures of everyday urban life.
