Five geothermal fields in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace included in national exploration program
Five geothermal fields located in the Eastern Macedonia and Thrace region have been included in Greece’s research and exploitation program for geothermal energy potential, according to official announcements.
The initiative aims to assess the region’s geothermal capacity as part of broader efforts to expand renewable energy sources and reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels. The program focuses on mapping subsurface resources and evaluating their suitability for future energy production and district heating applications.
Experts note that Greece possesses significant geothermal potential, particularly in northern regions, although development has been slowed by technical, financial, and regulatory challenges.
The inclusion of these fields reflects renewed interest in leveraging geothermal energy as part of the country’s long-term energy transition strategy.
