Famellos: “Mitsotakis on the run — he slipped out the back door in Dedeağaç”

SYRIZA–Progressive Alliance president Sokratis Famellos sharply criticized Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, calling him a “fugitive” after what he described as the Prime Minister’s attempt to avoid farmers during his visit to Alexandroupoli.

“Mr. Mitsotakis, after creating the perfect storm and the collapse of the primary sector, today escaped through the back gate of the airport’s fence in Dedeağaç to avoid the farmers,” Famellos said.

He added that “New Democracy is dangerous and is leading to the desertification of the Greek countryside. They must leave as soon as possible — not through the back door, but from the government.”

Famellos emphasized that SYRIZA–PS has already proposed, for over a year, a comprehensive plan to support the entire agricultural sector, which he described as “essential for the productive and social renewal of our country.”

Key points from Famellos’ statement:

Mitsotakis allegedly avoided meeting protesting farmers in Dedeağaç.

Criticism of the government over:

Delays in agricultural subsidies for 2024–2025,

Outstanding ELGA compensations, especially in Thessaly,

Outbreaks of sheep pox devastating livestock,

High production costs,

Drought issues in Meriç, and

Moves toward privatizing irrigation.

Famellos accused the government of corruption scandals involving the OPEKEPE fund (“blue locusts,” “Frappedes,” and “Hasapides”).

Farmers, he said, have “every right” to protest in Athens.

Famellos concluded by reaffirming that only a progressive government can implement a fair agricultural recovery plan for Greece.
