“Exercises in Democracy” by the citizens of tomorrow in Komotini
The event was co-organized by the Youth and Volunteering Center “exagono”, the Komotini Youth Municipal Council (DHSYN), and the Rodopi Directorate of Secondary Education, with the participation of students from 1st and 2nd General High Schools of Komotini, 2nd Vocational High School, and the Minority Junior High – High School of Komotini.
Through a democratic process, the students elected their leadership: Marina Lahana was named Mayor, while Valentini Fytila was elected as President of the Student Municipal Council. Under their guidance, participants debated and submitted proposals on local, social, and environmental issues in a session that closely mirrored a real municipal council meeting.
The event was honored by the presence of Komotini Mayor Mr. Yiannis Garanis, City Council President Mr. Christos Chatzipemou, Deputy Mayor of Administration and Daily Operations Mr. Dimitris Politiadis, Deputy Mayor of Social Solidarity and Gender Equality Ms. Kleopatra Stogiannidou, as well as Mr. Alexandros Chatzopoulos, President of the Komotini Youth Council, and Ms. Angeliki Magga, member of the same body.
The Municipal Council Simulation has now become an established tradition in Komotini, serving as a vital bridge between local governance and the school community. Through experiential learning, students gain essential insights into the workings of democratic institutions and develop a deeper awareness and commitment to civic engagement.
This event was not merely a simulation—it was a genuine exercise in democracy, led by the citizens of tomorrow.
