EMT Regional Governor Topsidis visits Gümülcine General Hospital
Eastern Macedonia and Thrace (EMT) Regional Governor Christodoulos Topsidis paid an official visit to Gümülcine General Hospital on Thursday, December 4, 2025, where he met with Hospital Director Eleni Rofaela. The meeting focused on the hospital’s operational needs, staffing shortages, and the soon-to-be-completed new Komotini Hospital being constructed with funding from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation.
Focus on Staffing Shortages
Governor Topsidis was accompanied by Deputy Head of Administrative Services and Human Resources Nikos Efkarpidis, Deputy Head for Digital Transformation and E-Governance Ridvan Molla Isa, and Rodopi Regional Advisor for Land Policy and Mountainous Areas Ahmet Osman Pehlivan.
During the meeting, Director Rofaela emphasized the urgent need for additional contract-based physicians as part of the regional program to strengthen local healthcare facilities.
Governor Topsidis stated that the request would be reviewed, adding:
“With the concrete support we will provide to the hospital’s medical staff, we will further strengthen public health in the Rodopi region.”
Countdown to the New Gümülcine Hospital
The discussion also covered progress on the new Komotini Hospital, donated by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, which is nearing completion. Director Rofaela briefed the governor on the latest preparations for putting the new facility into operation.
Governor Topsidis noted that the regional administration is advancing complementary infrastructure works—including road connections and utility networks—with a budget exceeding €5.5 million to ensure the project proceeds on schedule.

Topsidis underlined that the new Gümülcine General Hospital is among the most important healthcare investments in Northern Greece. He reaffirmed the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace’s commitment to supporting all initiatives aimed at upgrading healthcare infrastructure.

The visit concluded in a positive climate, with both sides expressing a shared determination to continue cooperating in order to provide higher-quality healthcare services to the residents of the Rhodope region and the broader Eastern Macedonia and Thrace area.
