Eastern Macedonia and Thrace Governor Topsidis meets Interior Minister Livanios on New Local Government Code
The new Local Government Code was at the center of discussions during a meeting between Christodoulos Topsidis, Governor of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace (EMTH), and Interior Minister Theodoros Livanios, held at the Ministry of Interior.
The meeting took place in the presence of several regional governors, during which the collective position of the Union of Regions of Greece (ENPE) was formally presented to the minister.
Strengthening the Role of Regions
In a public statement following the meeting, Governor Topsidis underlined that the new Local Government Code should serve as a stable and long-term institutional framework, enabling regions to play a stronger and more effective role in governance.
“The new Local Government Code must become the solid foundation upon which the role of Regions is substantially strengthened, with the ultimate goal of improving effectiveness for the benefit of citizens and society,” Topsidis stated.
Clear Responsibilities and Enhanced Capacity
According to Topsidis, the discussions focused on:
- The core principles of the new Code,
- The need for clearly defined responsibilities,
- The institutional and operational empowerment of regional authorities.
He emphasized that governors conveyed not only the decisions of their respective Regional Councils, but also the unified stance adopted collectively by ENPE.
Institutional Dialogue as a Pillar of Governance
Governor Topsidis highlighted the importance of cooperation between central government and regional authorities, stressing that strong local governance is built through institutional dialogue, collaboration, and shared responsibility.
“Local government is strengthened through dialogue, cooperation, and a common sense of responsibility. We will continue in this direction with seriousness and dedication to the public interest,” he concluded.
