Culture Min Mendoni inspects old tobacco warehouses in Xanthi
Culture Minister Lina Mendoni emphasized the need to restore and utilize the old tobacco warehouses in Xanthi during a site visit on Monday.
Accompanied by Eastern Macedonia and Thrace Regional Governor Christodoulos Topsidis and Xanthi Mayor Stratos Kontos, Mendoni reviewed the ownership status, past interventions and potential uses of the buildings.
Efforts are underway by local authorities to fully restore one of the warehouses to house a tobacco museum.
Mendoni also noted that Xanthi is one of the few regional units in Greece without its own archaeological museum to house both ancient artifacts and more recent historical items.
Earlier in the morning, Mendoni visited Didymoteicho to oversee the restoration work on the Beyazit Mosque, which had suffered significant fire damage. She stressed the importance of adhering to the restoration timeline set by the Culture Ministry and the National Technical University of Athens with the project expected to be completed by late 2025.
