Attention! Drowning cases are most common in Kavala and least in Alexandroupoli

It was stated that an average of 30 people drown every year on the coasts of the Eastern Macedonia Thrace Region, and that the cases are most common in Kavala region and the least in Alexandroupoli region.
The country has 15,000 kilometres of coastline, including islands and islets, while 60% of Greeks do not know how to swim.
It was emphasised that there is an average of one drowning case per day in Greece, as about 350 people die at sea every year, so it is important to take into account the advice of experts on basic safety rules before diving into the water.
According to the data, most cases of drowning at sea occur on the northern coast of Crete, the southern and northern coasts of Katerini, the western coast of the Ionian Sea and the northern coast of Ikaria.
Most of the victims are Greek men over the age of 60, while most of the deaths occur on beaches without lifeguards.
In the last four years, an average of 349 people have lost their lives at sea every year, while 77 per cent of the deaths were caused by drowning, 10 per cent by pathological causes, 1 per cent by fatal accidents and 12 per cent by as yet undetermined causes, according to the average of the last three years.
While 70 percent of those who died in drowning cases were men and 30 percent were women, 80 percent of these deaths were Greek nationals, 18 percent were foreigners and 2 percent were people of unknown nationality.
