Lekkas on İskeçe earthquake: “Caution needed along the İskeçe–Sarışaban fault line”

Following the earthquake that struck İskeçe this morning, Professor Efthymios Lekkas, seismologist and President of Greece’s Earthquake Planning and Protection Organization (OASP), issued a statement urging vigilance while stressing that there is no cause for alarm.

Speaking on ERTnews Radio 105.8, Lekkas explained:

“The earthquake occurred at 09:16. I am currently in Kavala, and the tremor was quite strongly felt here as well. Since this event took place along the İskeçe–SarışabanKavala fault line, which is a major fault system, it requires special attention.

The shaking was strong and widely perceived.

We must carefully monitor developments over the next few hours, but there is no reason for concern. All relevant authorities are on alert for any possible developments.”

According to initial data from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the earthquake registered a magnitude of 4.7 in the İskeçe region.
