Ataman reacts strongly to political banner at Panathinaikos-Maccabi game

Ataman described the banner, which read "Years of Illegal Occupation. We Do Not Forget," as inappropriate for the occasion.
In a written statement shared on his social media account, Ataman stated, "During the game yesterday, a political banner was displayed in a venue where sports and friendship should prevail. I expressed my discontent in the strongest terms possible."
He further emphasized, "Sports halls are places for friendship and peace, not politics." Ataman reassured that the banner would not affect the feelings of the thousands of people who have shown love to him and his team since their arrival. "There will always be a special affection between us and the people here. Regardless of what happens, my love for the real basketball fans here will remain unchanged. The strongest bond that unites us is our love for basketball. I believe that in the end, sports and friendship will prevail."
Ataman also noted the warm reception his team received upon arrival in Lefkoşa for the special tournament. He said, "As the head coach of Panathinaikos, who achieved legendary success last season, I supported this tournament greatly, believing it would contribute to friendship and peace. I arrived here with very positive emotions. The warm welcome at the airport and the genuine affection from the people made me very happy. Meeting hundreds of basketball fans at the autograph session at the hotel was a hopeful experience for all of us."
Following the incident with the banner, Ataman reacted by requesting a disqualification from the referee and subsequently went to the locker room.
