Young autistic man killed in police shooting draws thousands to Athens protest
Thousands of demonstrators marched through central Athens on Thursday to protest the fatal police shooting of a 20-year-old autistic man in the Argos regional unit, calling for an end to police violence and demanding justice for the victim.
The demonstration was organized by several left-wing political parties, civil society organizations and student unions following the death of the young man, who was shot by police after allegedly failing to comply with an order to stop.
Protesters gathered in central Athens before marching to the Greek Parliament at Syntagma Square, carrying banners and chanting slogans against police brutality. Participants urged authorities to ensure accountability and deliver justice for the deceased.
The incident occurred on July 8 in the Argos regional unit of the Peloponnese, where a police patrol reportedly attempted to stop the young man. According to authorities, he exited his vehicle and tried to flee on foot, prompting officers to open fire. He was critically wounded after being shot in the head.
It was later confirmed that the victim had autism. He remained hospitalized for several days before succumbing to his injuries on July 12.
The shooting has sparked widespread public debate in Greece over police use of force, particularly in cases involving individuals with disabilities and vulnerable groups.
