Yorgos Papandreou draws attention to Türkiye and Greece's fight against forest fires
Papandreu left a carnation at the monument built in memory of İsmail Cem in Kuşadası and expressed his belief that the seeds of peace will grow. Former Greek Prime Minister Yorgos Papandreu stated that Türkiye and Greece often struggle with forest fires and said, "We are not separate from each other. We are together. Papandreu, who was invited by Kuşadası Mayor Ömer Günel, came to İsmail Cem Peace and Friendship Square with the accompanying delegation. Papandreu left a carnation at the monument built in memory of former Foreign Minister İsmail Cem and had his photo taken in front of the olive tree he and İsmail Cem planted years ago to symbolise peace.
Speaking here, Papandreu said that he had moments full of emotion in Kuşadası. Thanking for the hospitality he received, Papandreu said: "It is a great honour to be with a friend like İsmail Cem who has a great importance in my life. You can see today in Samos how strong the foundations of friendship and peace that İsmail Cem and I laid between both nations many years ago are. In Turkey and Greece, we often fight against forest fires. We always have responsibilities towards nature. We are not separate from each other. We are together. We should act in common in the face of such events. I am very happy to be with you in Kuşadası." Kuşadası Mayor Günel said, "I believe that just as the sapling planted by İsmail Cem and Papandreu that day has become a big olive tree today, the seeds of peace planted today will grow and flourish between the two countries." Papandreu visited the damaged forest areas in Selçuk district of İzmir, the ancient city of Ephesus and the House of Virgin Mary, and then visited Günel in his office.
