Woman defrauded in Kavala

Two foreigners, members of a criminal group involved in phone fraud, were arrested on Monday (January 27, 2025) in Kavala while in the act of collecting €17,000.

The two perpetrators, a man and a woman, are part of a larger group that specializes in phone scams. They were caught after the victim reported the crime to the police. The scam involved an unknown man who pretended to be a doctor and claimed that a relative of the woman had been injured in a fall and required urgent surgery. The man demanded a large sum of money to carry out the operation. Another woman, pretending to be the injured relative, helped convince the victim to leave the money at a designated spot where the criminals would collect it.

After the woman reported the incident, the police launched a coordinated operation and arrested the two criminals, who were on their way to pick up the money.

In addition to this incident, the police discovered two other cases of phone fraud, which took place on December 13, 2024, in Kozani, and on January 20, 2025, in Larissa, where the same perpetrators scammed two elderly women, stealing €17,000 and jewelry.

From the arrested individuals, the police seized €700 and two bus tickets.

The arrested suspects will be brought before the Prosecutor of the Court of First Instance of Kavala, and investigations are ongoing to identify the other two unknown accomplices and their potential involvement in similar crimes.
