When will the winter time change happen? Will the clocks be set back this year?
In Greece, the daylight saving time change was implemented in 1975 following the 1973 energy crisis, aiming to make better use of daylight. The summer time begins on the last Sunday of March each year and lasts for seven months, while the winter time starts on the last Sunday of October and continues for five months.
This year, the clocks will be set back by one hour on Sunday, October 27, 2024, marking the start of winter time. This means an extra hour of sleep that day.
Will the clock change be abolished? The European Union has been discussing whether to end the bi-annual clock change. Following a survey by the European Commission, in which 4.6 million people from 28 member states participated, 84% supported stopping the clock changes altogether.
The commission proposed that countries that prefer permanent daylight saving time would make their final clock change in March 2021, while those favoring winter time would do so in October 2021. However, Greece has continued with its current system of alternating between summer and winter time changes.
