Vouliwatch director Loukopoulos highlights rule of law violations in Greece

Stefanos Loukopoulos, Director of Vouliwatch, an Athens-based nonpartisan parliamentary monitoring and democracy watchdog organization, stated during an interview on TPP TV on October 7, 2025, that violations of the rule of law in Greece are no longer considered newsworthy.
During the discussion, which focused on the fourth annual report by Govwatch—Vouliwatch’s independent monitoring platform—on the state of the rule of law in Greece, Loukopoulos expressed concern over the normalization of these violations and the lack of adequate public reaction. He emphasized that this trend is both alarming and dangerous for democracy.
Commenting on the issue, President of the Federation of Western Thrace Turks in Europe (ABTTF) Halit Habip Oğlu said:
“We fully share Vouliwatch Director Stefanos Loukopoulos’s concerns about the state of the rule of law in our country, Greece. In recent years, a series of legal scandals, transparency issues, and lack of accountability have deeply shaken citizens’ trust in the government and official institutions. Unfortunately, the government has failed to uphold the rule of law, a fundamental pillar of democracy, as has also been clearly criticized in the European Commission’s annual reports.
As the Turkish community of Western Thrace, we are directly experiencing the negative consequences of the systematic violations of the rule of law in our country. Greece’s Supreme Court continues to disregard European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) rulings concerning the Bekir Usta and Others group of cases. For over 17 years, Greece has refused to implement ECHR decisions regarding our associations, blatantly ignoring its obligations under the European Convention on Human Rights and undermining the rule of law.”
