Very high wildfire risk alert for Aegean islands and Crete
Authorities have issued a high wildfire risk warning for several regions on Tuesday, urging residents and visitors to take extra precautions as hot, dry conditions heighten the threat of blazes.
According to the Fire Risk Prediction Map of the General Secretariat for Civil Protection, areas placed under risk level 4, classified as “very high”, include Karpathos in the South Aegean, the islands of Chios, Samos and Ikaria in the North Aegean and the regional units of Iraklio and Lasithi on Crete.
Civil Protection officials said state agencies, regional authorities and municipalities in these areas have been put on heightened alert to respond rapidly in case of fire.
The public has been urged to avoid outdoor activities that could accidentally ignite flames, including burning vegetation, operating machinery that emits sparks, lighting grills or discarding lit cigarettes. The use of fire in fields is banned during the summer fire season.
Authorities emphasized that anyone who spots a fire should immediately call the Fire Service at 199. Updated safety instructions are available in Greek and English at civilprotection.gov.gr.
