Turkish diplomat Sipahioğlu commemorated in Athens
Turkish diplomat Ömer Haluk Sipahioğlu, who was assassinated by the 17 November terrorist organization in 1994, was commemorated in Athens on the anniversary of his death.
The memorial ceremony was attended by Türkiye's Ambassador to Athens Çağatay Erciyes, embassy personnel, diplomats, military attachés and members of the Turkish community.
Participants laid wreaths and observed a moment of silence in memory of Sipahioğlu, honoring his service and sacrifice.
Speaking during the ceremony, Ambassador Erciyes stressed that terrorism remains a crime against humanity and reaffirmed Türkiye's determination to preserve the memory of diplomats who lost their lives in terrorist attacks while serving abroad.
The Revolutionary Organization 17 November (17N), a Greek far-left terrorist group, carried out a series of assassinations targeting diplomats, politicians and public officials between 1975 and 2002. Sipahioğlu was killed in Athens on July 4, 1994, while serving at the Turkish Embassy.
