Tobacco producers urged to protest price gap in “Vento” purchases
In a public statement issued on Monday, the cooperative warned that while traders have begun purchasing vento tobacco, the price gap between standard tobacco and vento tobacco has raised significant concerns among producers.
Concerns Over Pricing Disparities
According to the cooperative, producers had previously been encouraged by trader representatives to adopt vento processing methods, with assurances that the market would support the transition.
“Valued producers, we must unite and ensure that every trader representative who urged us to produce vento tobacco stands behind their words,” the statement said.
The board questioned the current pricing strategy, asking why those who had previously reassured farmers are not now supporting them amid lower-than-expected purchase prices.
Call for Collective Action
The cooperative urged producers to confront buyers directly regarding the price differences and to demand clarification.
“Today is a day for unity,” the statement emphasized. “If we act together, those setting these prices will be forced to reconsider.”
The organization stressed that solidarity among producers is essential to prevent financial losses and protect farm incomes in the region.
Agricultural Market Impact
Tobacco remains a key agricultural product in parts of Thrace, contributing significantly to rural employment and export activity. Pricing disputes during procurement seasons can directly affect household incomes and regional economic stability.
The cooperative concluded its statement by encouraging growers to remain united, expressing confidence that collective action would strengthen their negotiating position.
