Tender for Alexandroupoli and other 21 regional airports being prepared

The government, through the Growthfund, is speeding up the procedures for proclaiming a tender regarding the development of 22 regional airports currently managed by the Civil Aviation Authority.
The aim is to upgrade the outdated infrastructure of these airports, many of which are located in busy tourist destinations such as Paros, Milos and Naxos.
The initiative is part of the effort to spread the economic benefits from tourism geographically, to decongest saturated destinations and to improve the services provided to local communities.
In 2024, the airports concerned transported approximately 8 million passengers, an 8% increase on the previous year.
The airports serve Alexandroupoli, Araxos, Astypalaia, Chios, Ikaria, Ioannina, Kalymnos, Karpathos, Kasos, Kastelorizo, Kastoria, Kozani, Kythira, Leros, Limnos, Milos, Naxos, Nea Anchialos, Paros, Sitia, Skyros and Syros.
However, many of the airports lack the economic purpose to attract investments. For that reason, the Growthfund is looking at concession models with tax and other incentives for investors, with parallel investment by the state, which will retain a percentage of the share capital.
In addition, the tender will involve all 22 airports and not individual ones.
